RV mattress / buying guide
How to measure your RV bed.
Record the support and the available space separately. Then check shape, total height, weight limits and any bed movement. A Queen label, an old mattress or a floorplan name cannot supply all of those measurements.

Compare the actual inches before comparing the size name. A Short Queen label alone cannot settle which length to order.
1. Record the platform and enclosure
With the mattress removed where practical, measure the supporting platform's width and length. Also measure the surrounding usable space. Walls, cabinets and trim can create a tighter limit than the platform suggests.
Take width measurements at the head, middle and foot, and length measurements along both sides. Note the narrowest obstruction. Keep the old mattress's dimensions as a separate reference, especially if it has softened, compressed or changed shape.
- Write width × length with the unit every time; do not mix inches and centimetres.
- Record support dimensions separately from clearance dimensions.
- Photograph or sketch corners, walls, cabinets and fixed obstructions.
- Check the vehicle and bed instructions before moving or accessing a mechanism.
2. Check shape before reducing it to a rectangle
For rounded corners, cut corners, notches or a curved edge, width and length describe only the outside rectangle. Ask the supplier how to submit a template and how the finished outline will be made.
For a split or hinged mattress, record each section, the fold direction and the hinge location. Keep those requirements separate from the full sleeping footprint. A mattress's ability to bend cannot be inferred from foam construction.
3. Measure total height and movement clearance
Check the maximum installed height in the sleeping position and any required stored, folded or slide-out position. Cabinet doors, headboards, straps and moving parts can each set a different limit. Follow the bed or vehicle manufacturer's instructions for the required clearances.
Add all layers that consume this space: the mattress, topper, protector and any under-mattress ventilation layer. If an 8-inch limit includes the whole stack, a 7-inch mattress plus a 1.5-inch topper is too tall at 8.5 inches.

| Condition | Measure or request | Keep separate from |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed bed | Support, enclosure and installed stack height | The old mattress's label |
| Lift-up storage bed | Net mattress weight and mechanism's permitted load | Shipping weight or mattress support rating |
| Murphy or vertical storage | Permitted thickness, retention and approved mattress arrangement | General foam flexibility |
| Fold or slide-out | Sections, fold line and clearance in required positions | The full sleeping rectangle alone |
4. Check weight and the handling route
If weight matters, request net mattress weight for the exact size and thickness. The bed structure's total load limit is a separate figure; a mattress manufacturer's claimed sleeper capacity does not replace the vehicle or lift mechanism's limit.
Measure the entry route and turns. Ask how the order is packaged, how it must be unpacked and whether the expanded mattress can be removed if a return is needed. Do not assume it can be recompressed into its original carton.
5. Send the unresolved checks to the right supplier
Use your measurements to find a nominal configuration, then resolve tolerance, support and mechanism questions before ordering. If the product statement and vehicle instructions disagree, keep the result as needing confirmation.
- My platform is ___ × ___ and the usable enclosure is ___ × ___, measured in ___.
- My maximum installed height is ___ including ___ of added layers.
- The bed has these requirements: fixed / lift-up / Murphy / fold / slide-out / shaped corners.
- What finished-size tolerance applies to this exact configuration?
- Is this size, height, net weight and arrangement approved for my setup?
- If these dimensions are wrong, what cancellation or return terms apply before and after opening?
Questions before you order
Should I enter the old mattress size or the bed size?
Record both, separately. The supporting platform, usable enclosure and movement restrictions govern the space available; the old mattress is only a reference.
How much spare room should I add?
There is no single allowance this site can safely apply to every RV. Ask the mattress supplier about finished-size tolerance and the vehicle or bed manufacturer about support and required clearance.
Can the workbench confirm a custom or folding installation?
No. It can flag geometry and documented constraints, but special shapes and moving-bed approval require the relevant supplier or manufacturer.
